Like life breathing | building the world's first off-grid pavilion hydrogen application

On July 22, 2021, the world's first off-grid hydrogen application Exhibition Hall (hereinafter referred to as "Exhibition Hall") jointly built by Shanghai International Automobile City and Tongji University was inaugurated in Shanghai International Automobile City. The exhibition hall integrates a number of leading hydrogen energy technologies and products, filling the gap of hydrogen energy application in the field of architecture in China.

The idea of "breathing like life" air film architecture for the main body of the exhibition hall comes from the "Fire Eye" laboratory (air film version) initiated by Dr. Su Yunsheng, executive vice president of Shanghai International Design Innovation Institute of Tongji University, which greatly reduces the construction energy consumption of traditional buildings.

Exhibition hall is divided into phase I and phase ii project, and a period of a built-in container module of hydrogen fuel cell membrane structure and an air space, in the creative space, set up a system based on hydrogen fuel cell cogeneration, away from the traditional power supply, can not only provide heat and electricity for the building, Also through the recycling of waste heat for building refrigeration, humidity control, effectively realize the building energy saving.

The exhibition hall phase I adopts Shanghai Qingneng Ruizi New Energy Technology Co., LTD. VL II generation hydrogen fuel cell cogeneration heat and power system, rated power is 5kW, the overall efficiency of cogeneration heat and power can reach 80% to 90%, to achieve efficient utilization of energy. After hydrogen passes through the hydrogen cycle module independently developed by Qingneng, it enters the core fuel cell stack for power generation. The generated direct current is then converted into alternating current through DCAC to provide electricity for the daily operation of the hydrogen energy exhibition hall. The surplus heat energy can be heated by the tap water of the exhibition hall through the recycling device. The whole process is free of any pollutants and the only by-product is pure water.


In addition, the system adopts double insurance mechanism to ensure the safety of operation. On the one hand, the fuel cell system is equipped with a hydrogen concentration sensor that automatically alarms if hydrogen leaks before it enters the stack. On the other hand, the closed space where the system is placed is equipped with linkage alarm devices including hydrogen concentration probe, ambient temperature monitoring probe, flame monitoring probe and fan unit. In case of abnormality, the alarm and wind machine will open automatically to ensure the safe operation of the whole system.


This project provides research demonstration for off-grid hydrogen production, hydrogen energy storage, and hydrogen fuel cell cogeneration of heat and power, and carries out beneficial exploration and practice for promoting the application of hydrogen energy in the construction field. The project cooperated with Anting Hydrogenation Station to provide electricity and heat for the exhibition hall and ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the energy system of the exhibition hall. Shanghai Shunhua New Energy System Co., Ltd. is the technical responsible unit for the integrated energy utilization system of the project.

Next, the research team will further experiment with hydrogen fuel cell heat recovery devices to further improve the energy efficiency of hydrogen buildings through CHP.


The second phase of the exhibition hall will be completed by the end of this year. It consists of four containers with different functions and an air film structure space, displaying different application scenarios of hydrogen energy according to the three dimensions of ecology, life and production. Its design is integrated with the surrounding ecology, just like a living organism growing naturally.
